FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commence was held in Ross’ Rooms last -night presided over by Mr. J. K. Hornblow (President). Also present were: Messrs. M. E. Perreau, D. Christie, A. E. Ajsop, D. R. Barron, F. Rimmer, H. Hornblow, A. E. Admore, G. F. Smith, R. McMurray, C. A. Pearson, J. S. Moir, Jno. Ross, and the secretary (Mr. R. Hornblow). Apologies for absence was received from Messrs. 11. Osborne, Woods, Newton. The President extended a welcome to the Mayor (Mr. Perreau) and also Mr. A. E. Alsop (the new Bench member). CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the Post Office Department, notifying that the requests of the Chamber to have the night mail from the south, arriving at 9 p.m., sorted .the same evening, and for the mails for. the south to close at Foxton at 6 a.m. instead of 8 p.m. the previous night, had been agreed —Received. With the exception of the Shannon Borough * Council, all the local bodies circularised re protesting against the Otaki Cottage Hospital being a charge on the Palmerston North hospital, notified their support of the protest. . NEW COURTHOUSE. The President brought up the question of agitating for the erection of a new courthouse. The Chamber had been successful in obtaining a new police station and when the. question of providing a new courthouse as well Avas mfioted,' the Minister of Justice said that the amount of money expended by the Justice Department in Foxton was as much as he felt justified in recommending at the time. After inspecting the courthouse, however, he promised to obtain a report, and this was done, but the Magistrate’s report on the condition of the building Was apparently not pressing. He said the building was about 60 years old, riddled with borer and in «, bad state of repair and he suggested that a deputation should Avait on the Magistrate the following morning with a vieAv to obtaining his support in the request for a new building. Mr. Perreau endorsed the President’s remarks. It Avas decided that a deputation, consisting of the President, the Mayor, and -Messrs Christie and Rammer, Avait on the S.M. (Mr. J. L. Stout) regarding the matter. It Avas also decided to Avrite the Minister of Justice, and the member for the district, asking that an amount be placed on the estimates for a new Courthouse. SOCIAL EVENING. .

The President suggested that a social evening should be held by the Chamber at an early date, to Avhich the Palmerston North, Levin and

Shannon Chambers be invited, together Avith their lady friends. He thought it. desirable that members of the Chamber l should have some social relaxation from the business side of their efforts.

It was decided to hpld a social evening on Monday week in Per- : reau’s rooms, and Messrs Barron and Pearson were appointed a committee to arrange items, etc. ‘ A vote of thanks and appreci- ! ntion was accorded Mr: J. Newton, k the local postmaster, for his efforts in regard to alterations in sorting ! of mails. * The "secretary reported that to--1 gether with the postmaster and linesman, he had visited Moutoa with regard to telephones in that district. Mr. Christie said that the Postmaster considered that it would be a good plan if members of the Chamber would go out to meet the settlers of the district in regard to telephones and oher matters. A committee consisting of Messrs Moir, Chrisie, and Pearson, was appointed to arrange details with the Postmaster in this respect.- - The secretary was accorded a vote of thanks for his efforts and time spent on the matter. BEACH POSTAL FACILITIES. Mr. Alsop reported on the Beach postal facilities and it was decided that together with the Mayor, he convene a meeting of Beach residents to go into the matter with the local postmaster. NEW MEMBER. Mr. 1. Corn was eleced a member of the Chamber. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. < Mr. Admore suggested that something should be done to endeavour to have the District High School building erected. It was resolved that the Education Board be written to asking that a suitable building for secondary education classes be proceeded with as early as possible. The President was asked to give the Chamber a half hour talk on his trip round the world, which he consented to do. He also suggested however, that other members should follow suit with addresses on suitable subjects, and Mr. G. .F. Smith consented to give a lecturette on the cash and credit system.. Accounts amounting to £3 4s fid were passed for payment. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
