THE CENSUS TOTAL.
SEX RATIO OF POPULATION. Wellington, June 30. Further census figures, by districts instead of towns, show that Auckland is much tlfe largest province, and now contains 32 per cent, of the total population. Details are as follows: —
The increase in Auckland is 55,.307, Wellington 24,800, Canterbury 14,712, Otago 12,090, and the total increase for New Zealand is 125,•171. To this tally lias to be added 4230 for half-castes, now reckoned as Maoris.
A point of some interest which is not without its important side is the sex ratio of population in the various districts. All the northern districts have a greater male population than female. Auckland’s male majority amounts to 14,800, Ilowke’s' Bay’s to 2000, Taranaki’s to 3000. and Wellington’s to 7000. In the South Island matters are not quite the same. Marlborough has a. male majority of 1000. Nelson of 2400, Westland of 800, and Southland of 2800. On the other hand, in Canterbury there tire 2200 more females than males, and Otago has about an equal number in proportion.
