FOOTBALL.
the TRADESMEN’S MATCH. LEVIN (17), FOXTON NIL. The return match between the Foxton and Levin tradesmen took place on the racecourse yesterday afternoon before a good and interested crowd of spectators, and i'esulted in a win for the visitors by 17 points to nil, after a much improved game to that played in Levin. Without taking any glory from the Levin team it cannot be denied that had Foxton stiffened up its ranks with three or four club players, as did Levin, they could have had a vie tory, but they kept to the spirit and intention of the contest, except in the ease of Wright and Rankin — two third-grade players. Broughton, the Levin 16-year-old Weraroa junior, was the outstanding player of the match. He made openings for his team time and again, and his speed, dodging and clever head work were classic. He was as elusive as an eel. On several occasions he beat all opposition, and without him the play would have been equalised. There was nothing to choose between the forward packs, the locals showing marked improvement with Hutchins, Wright, Chaffey and Hornblow ever in the van.
Ball put in some dashing work but had bad luck on several occasions in mishandling. Broad, Rankin, and Williams did good service in the back division.
Prior to the commencement of the game, the Mayor Mr Perreau), briefly addressed both teams and extended a welcome to the visitors. He was pleased to know that the tradesmen of both towns could meet in friendly rivalry and enjoy themselves. He congratulated Levin on its previous victory, but Foxton being the oldest town should have won. He hoped both teams would have a good game and that they would meet.on many other occasions (applause). The game in the first half was e " yly contested, Foxton on three occasions missing good scoring chances. Towards the end Broughton intercepting a pass cut in and beat the local backs and scored, the kick by Taylor did not' add the major points and the spell ended in favour of Levin by 3 to nil. Sortly after the opening Broughton raced away and scored, which Christensen converted, giving a lead of '8 points. Foxton attacked and Ball broke through, but lost the ball and shortly after Broad broke away but was smothered near the line. Bryant saved a dangerous white rush by finding the line and Ball saved a dangerous onslaught by a mark. Broughton got away again, but was splendidly grassed by Rankin near the line and yellows were kept busy on the defence untiUllutchins broke through, and eased the attacking pressure by whites. Broughton snapped up and transferred to Cole who stab-punt-ed when opposed and by fast following up scored. ' The kick failed —Levin 11, Foxton nil. Ball broke away again, but had no backing and Levin rushed play back to Foxton’s territory where Rankin stole the ball from an opponent and cleared, but shortly after Broughton secured and eluded nearly the whole Foxton pack and transferred 'to Cole who scored —again the kick missed and Levin led by 14 to nil. Whites kept up the attack and Taylor added the Anal try.- Levin winning by 17 points to nil. Mr. R. Rangiheuea, in the unavoidable absence of Moses, controlled the game.
After the match the teams were entertained to refreshments in PeiTeau’s rooms. Mr. Hutchins welcomed the visitors and congratulated them on their win that day.
Mr. Emmett returned thanks on behalf of the Levin team and thanked the Mayor for the welcome he had given them prior to the commencement of the game. The team greatly appreciated his sportsmanship. Mr. Emmett extended an invitation to the Fox ton team to again meet them in Levin on Wednesday week, when their team would be re-organised and the match should prove more closely contested. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) said he was pleased to see the Levin and Foxton • tradesmen coming together on the field of sport. It was a good thing for both towns. He also thanked Mr. Emmett fr his remarks. The teams were as follows: — Foxton: M. Walls, Rankin, Bryant, Williams, Broad, Little, Ball, Small, Coley, Honour, Hornblow, Winstnnley, Hutchins, Chaffey, Wright. Levin. —Cole, Siddlcsj. Booth, Broughton, MeFarlane, Jones, Emmett, Christensen, Black, Bull, Taylor, James, Freeman, de Malmonche, Trueman.
The local Tradesmen’s team met last night when it was decided to form a Wednesday Club, to be named the Wednesday Tradesmen’s Club.
Mr H. Hutchins was elected President and Mr R, Hornblow secretary. A selection committee was set up consisting of Messrs Hutchins, D. Ball and Mr J. Desmond.
Mr J. Desmond was elected coach subject to 'consent, The object of the club is to endeavour to promote Wednesday football matches among the tradesmen of the surrounding towns and the secretary was instructed to communicate with Palmerston N. and' Shannon in this connection. It was decided that teams are to be made up ot bona tide tradesmen
with the exclusion of Senior and Junior players. The secretary got into communication with Mr H. Hook, of Shannon, this morning and Mr Hook undertook to try and arrange a game between Foxton and Shannon in the near future. Foxton again meets Levin, in Levin on Wednesday week. The Wellington reps, defeated the All Blacks at Wellington yesterday by 21 points to 14. SATURDAY’S LOCAL ATTRACTIONS. FOUR GAMES ON THE RACECOURSE. gome will be able to witness Local followers of the national four local teams in action at the racecourse on Saturday as follows: At 1.30 p.m. Foxton D. 11.5. will meet Foxton fourths; Foxton thirds will meet W(eraroa thirds at 1.30 p.m.; Foxton Juniors will meet Weraroa juniors at 2.50 p.m. and Foxton seniors will meet Shannon at 2.50 p.m. The thirds in their grade are about the hardest nuts to crack in the union and “Mick” Cook deserves more than a passing word of praise for the splendid showing the boys have thus far made. Thenplay is a treat to witness and. their success is' due to systematic practice and keeping fit. In this connection they set a good example to the higher local grades. The juniors had a win last Saturday against Wanderers and showed marked improvement from the previous game at Shannon. On Saturday they are up against a team the equal of Shannon and with their full team in the field should be able to show their mettle. Weraroa possess a rearguard full of dash and Foxton will lie extended from the start.
Shannon seniors played Otaki at Otaki last Saturday and after a strenuous game succeeded in defeating the southerners by 8 to 3. Otaki, be it said are no slugs. The local team therefore will be given a task that should test every man. Shannon displayed wonderful combination against Otaki and they made few mistakes, and they can be relied upon to take no risks with Foxton.
Contrary to . expectations Shannon juniors defeated Awaliou at Shannon on Saturday. But we think that Awaliou will turn the tables on them when they clash on the local ground.
