QUEEN CARNIVAL ARRANGED.
«. TO RATSE MONEY FOR PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS. THE LADIES TAKE ACTION. A mootino- of all ladies interested in the quest ion of raising funds for the purpose of erecting public swimming baths locally was convened by the Mayoress (Airs I'erreau) and held at her residence on Thursday afternoon. There were upwards of 40; ladies present, and apologies for absence were received from the following: Mosel nines A. S. Easton, S. Perynian, IC. Cowley, J. K. Tllornl&ow and Walton. “TO SHAME THE MEN.” In opening the meeting Air. Perreau said he was pleased to see such a representative gathering present. The object of the meeting was to decide on ways and means of raising funds (for the purpose of providing swimming baths locally which was a very deserving cause. In fact, a more worthy object had never before been placed before the public of Eoxlon. He gave a brief outline of past propositions which had failed. On the failure of the last
project, Mrs Perreau had offered to approach the ladies to see what could be done. Consequently Airs Perreau had gone to great trouble to find four young ladies who were prepared to act as candidates in a queen carnival effort.. It rested with the ladies that afternoon .to decide on some scheme that would put the men to shame. QUEEN CARNIVAL EFFORT APPROVED OF.
Mrs Perreau, on being elected to the chair said that four young ladies had offered their services in connection with a proposed queen carnival effort and she thought that now that art unions were practically out of (lie question a queen carnival effort would he the most suitable project. Mrs Me Murray asked how the meeting stood with regard to Iho men’s committee recently set up. Air. Perreau said that the men's committee was still in existence and already had two donations of fit) in hand. This money would go towards any effort in connection with baths.
Airs Iloasman: Are they prepared to help (he ladies?
Mr. Perreau: ARist certainly. Airs Heasmnn said that she was in favour of the proposed effort but she did not think the present time opportune. It was rather a --lack time at present. Two or since months work at a later date; would lie far better Ilian a long drawn out carnival over a slack period. Airs Perreau said that her reasons for bringing tlic matter forward at present was that it was a month since the matter had been placed before her. The question of providing baths had been dragging on for many years now and it was lime some finality was reached. On the motion of Alesdamcs Heasmnn and Barron if was decided that a queen carnival he nrinnged to raise funds for the purpose of erecting swimming baths locally. A QESTION OF ORGANISER. Mr. Perreau reported that an organiser could he procured at a comuiision of 10 per cent on the net proceeds. All's Pearson consented to net as organiser for the effort! free of cost. Airs Woods was of opinion that •' paid organiser would lie better • ban accepting Airs Pearson's services gratis. The position of organiser would he no bed of roses for Afrs Pearson, she said. Airs Pearson's offer was aecepted with thanks. THE QUEEN CANDIDATES.
Mrs l’eri'enu said that the following four young ladies had consented to be candidates in a queen carnival:
Citizens’ Queen*: Hiss X. Spring; Farmers’: Miss Y. Easton; Fibre: Miss E. Moore; Sports:'Miss M. Stevenson.
The action of Mrs Perreau in connection with the above was endorsed, the above candidates being approved of.
It was decided that the question of colours he left to the candidates.
THE COMMITTEES.
The following committees were set up with power to add: —
Sports’ Committee: Mesdames Ilarron, Rand, Roore, Cook. Citizens’ Committee: Mesdames Corn, J. B. Coley, Spring. Nt-wth and Poireau. Farmers’ Committee: Mesdames Heasiuan, Alexander, Trueman, Hudson. File e Committee: Mesdames Carmonf, Hussey, Fuller, Robertson. Misses Walls and Scadden. The following executive commitlee was elected, representative of all the committees: —Mesdames Heasmnn ( Farmers).. 'Fuller- ( Fibre) Barron (Sports) and Spring (Citizens) and Mrs Owen, the organiser and chairwoman being ex-officio members. GENERAL. If was decided that Mesdames Pearson and Perreau be empowered to operate on the Carnival banking account. It- was resolved that the coronation dress be purchased out of the carnival funds. Mr. Perreau said that, in all probability the new Town Hall would be completed towards the end of November, and it was decided that the effort be continued on until such time as the hall was opened. ■Mrs Hussey moved a vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Perreau and
the “Herald” for their efforts in connection with Iho movement, which was carried hv acclamation. MEETING OF .EXECUTIVE.
At the conclusion of the meeting the executive committee met and it was decided that the Queen colours be as follows: — Farmers: Kingfisher blue and tangerine; Sports: Yellow and black; Citizens: green and rose; Fibre: yellow and royal blue. A; draw for shop days was held which resulted as follows: Fibre 1, Citizens 2, Farmers A, and Sports -I. Voles are, to be 3d each. A Hag pole will be erected in the triangle where colours will denote Ihe position of the queens.
