FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL .
The monthly meeting of the above committee was held in the secretary’s office last night. Present: Messrs. F. Wood (Chairman), Alsop, Ross, Walton, Perreau, J. K. Hornblow, Hutchins, Stevenson and the secretary (Mr. Roore Rangiheuea). Mir. F. Mason (headmaster) was also in attendance.
Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From Wanganui Education Board, asking quotation for the installation of gas heaters fin the temporary class-rooms and requiring committee to pay for gas. consumed. —Resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman and headmaster.
From same informing that Miss Martha Williams has been appointed as an assistant to the staff of the main school. —Received.
From same enclosing application from Miss Leslie as assistant teacher. —Resolved to support the application. Accounts were passed for payment. It was decided to ask for details in connection with account fur tennis court improvements.
The reports from the visiting committee were read and adopted, and it was decided to procure blinds, and ask the board to erect extra bat and coat racks and to overhaul the steam radiators; to make alterations to the horse paddock and to obtain quotations for cuerete kerbing along the main entrance. The chairman, secretary, headmaster and Mr. Hutchins were given power to act in connection with tilling holes and turfing playground.
The headmaster’s offer to conduct a shop day to raise funds for school sports was accepted with thanks.
Resolved to offer a quantity of corrugated iron for sale and to leave the details in the hands of the chairman, secretary and Mr. Stevenson.
A lengthy discussion took place re urging the Board to construct buildings to accommodate secondary and technical classes. It was pointed out that the Board was renting five buildings for this purpose and the scattered classes and loss of time in supervision was detrimental to the students and costly to the Department. It was decided to urge the Board to erect a separate building to accommodate secondary and technical classes.
It was also resolved to urge upon the Board the acquisition of the native section, at the rear of Iliakara Garden and adjoining the girls’ playground, for educational purposes.
On the motion of Messrs Perreau and Ross it was resolved to ask Mr. Hornblow to accept nomination to represent the southern ward on the Education Board and eulogistic references were made to Mr. Hornblow’s work in connection with educational affairs. —Mr. Hornblow promised to give the request consideration.
Mr. Alsop reported on matters in connection with the side-school. Other minor matters were discussed and the meeting rose.
