THE BOTTLE-THROWING INCIDENT.
YOUTH GETS FIVE YEARS PROBATION. At the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday the youth who pleaded guilty to throwing a bottle at tlie Napier train at Terrace End on April 5, was up i'or sentence. Ilis Honour Air. Justice Heed, addressing the prisoner said: “It is fortunate for you that you did not injure the driver by throwing the bottle, otherwise you might have been here on a much more serious charge than the one you are now accused of. However, I will take into consideration the fact that the probation officer recommends that you be granted probation; but it will have to be on very strict terms. Apparently the whole trouble has been due to your drinking. According to the newspapers, the publican who supplied you with liquor has been punished. ... I can’t think of anything more horrible than giving liquor to a boy of sixteen. I propose to admit you to probation for a long term in order that the probation officer might be able to exeeroise some sort of control over you. You will be admitted to probation for five years on the usual conditions and also on the special terms that you pay the cost of the prosecution, take out a prohibition order, and that your associates meet with approval of the probation officer. In view of the circumstances of the ease, an order will be made for the suppression of the name.”
