Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, MAY 29, 1920. OTAKI COTTAGE HOSPITAL.
FROM a political point of view there is justification for Mr W. IT. Field’s agitation that the Palmerston Hospital Board shall take over and maintain the Otaki cottage hospital. Mr. Field represents the Otaki electorate. But Air. Field seems to forget that the Palmerston Hospital District extends far beyond the area of his constituency. In his remarks to the Minister of Health at a deputation which discussed the subject, this week, Mr. Field again grossly misrepresented the Palmerston Board by stating that that body had “starved the Otaki hospital.” The absurdity of such a statement would be apparent to the Minister, who knows that the Department and not the Board is responsible for the maintenance and administration of the Otaki cottage hospital and that the Palmerston Board has been made responsible for collecting patients’ fees. Mr. Field’s talk of forming a separate hospital district in order to maintain a hospital at Otaki conflicts with the policy of the Minister and Department and from whi<di Mr. Monk (the Board’s representative of that part of the district) entirely dissociates himself. It should be borne in upon Mr. Field by now that neither the Minister or Department will attempt to compel the Board to take over and maintain the present institution. The Board has expressed its willingness to render special service to meet urgent surgical and medical cases in the southern end of the district and we feel sure that when the Minister has conferred with the Board on the subject, an arrangement will be come to that should be satisfactory to all concerned.
