A verdict that death was due to shock from severe burns was returned at a coronial inquiry at Palmerston yesterday, touching the death of Daphne Doughty, aged four years.
During the month just past 34 new consumers have signed up with the Horowhenua Power Board. There have also been 13 additions to existing installations, 7 ranges, 7 milking motors and 17 waterheaters have been connected up. It was stated at Tuesday night’s Borough Council meeting that the new Town Hall would be ready for occupation before the Christmas season. It is probable that the Council will celebrate the opening with a fitting public function. Pene Tabu Green, the young Maori who threw a bottle at a Maori woman near Kaikoura and killed her child, was sentenced at Chistchurch, by Mr. Justice Adams to three years’ Borstal detention. Counsel stated that the trouble was due to liquor being taken into the pah. A very successful concert was held under the auspices of the Bulls Bowling Club in the Bulls Town Hall last night. Mr. J. H. Perritt (president) in referring to the club’s affairs, said that the sum of £l,lOO had been expended on the reserve which also included croquet lawn. The concert programme was contributed to by Marton, Feilding, Kongo tea and Fox ton performers. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Horowhenua Power Board it was decided to abolish the horse-pow-er charge for milking machines and substitute a net unit charge as follows:—For the first 100 units per month, 4Jd; for the second 100 units per month, 3d; for all additional units, 2d. A minimum charge of 5s and 7s 6d for 1 and 14 h,p. motors per month is to be made. The question of a reduction of rates to dairy factories was referred to a sub-committee.
The scow Kohi arrived in port yesterday afternoon with a cargo of benzine.
It was decided at Tuesday night's special meeting of the Borough Council to request the contractors engaged in removing the trees in Victoria Park to remove the fence oji the northern boundary back as far as the roadway. This will mean that the Victoria Park reserve will be considerably increased. The Rt. Hon. J. 6. Coates announced yesterday that Parliament will meet on June 16. Cabinet met yesterday, but Mr. Coates said he had no announcement to make regarding the completion of the Ministry either to-day or to-mor-row. lie also said he was unable to state when he would be leaving for the Imperial Conference.
The local Postmaster informs us that every savings bank depositor should now forward his or her pass-book to the Chief Postmaster or postmaster at the place shown on the cover of the book for examination and insertion of interest for the period ended the 31st March, 1926. Envelopes for the purpose will be supplied on application at any post-office saving bank.
The death occurred at Palmerston yesterday' of Mrs Charlotte Newth, wife of Mr Robert Newth senr., aged 86 years. The deceased arrived in New Zealand when 14 years of age. The greater part of her life was spent in the Palmerston district. Besides the aged husband, the sons and daughters now living are Messrs George, Fred, Robert and Warren, and Mrs Harvey (Auckland), Mrs. ' Johnston (Mangaweka), and Mrs Beauchamp (I-lawera). There are also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
