HEMP MARKET.

APRIL GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of April have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: — The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are: —

Ninety-one bales at Picton were graded line. Thirty-two bales at Auckland, 72 at Wellington, 178 at Foxton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —Fine 91 (78), good fair 801 (912), high fair 5418 (5122), low fair 2426 (2467), common 572 (304), rejected 282 (180) a total of 9590 bales as against 9063 graded the same period last year, an increase of 527 bales. The number, of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 2468, Wellington 2943, Foxton 2136, Wairoa 344, Picton 91, Blenheim 222, Dunedin 248, Pt. Chalmers 118, Bluff 1020.

Forty-one bales at Auckland, 50 at Foxton, 38 at Wellington, and 44 at the Bluff were condemned.

The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period last year being given in parenthesis:—lst grade 420 (489), 2nd grade 1749 (1520), 3rd grade '4ll (480), condemned 173 (81), a total of 2753 bales as against 2570 bales graded the sayie period last year, an increase of 183 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were:—Auckland 840, Foxton 470, Wellington 737, Wairoa 58, Picton 33, Blenheim 78, Pt. Chalmers 57, Bluff 437, and Dunedin 43.

Stripper Tow: —Eighteen bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade, 113 at Wellington and 52 at Foxton were graded 2nd., 12 at Wellington and M at Foxton were graded 3rd, and 1 at Wellington was condemned. A total of 210 bales as against 140 bales graded the same period last year, showing an increase of 70 bales.

S tripper Slips. —Thirty- eigh t bales at Auckland, 18 at Foxton, 6 at Wairoa and 11 at the Bluff were graded 2nd. grade. Twenty-nine at Auckland, 54 at Wellington and 97 at the Bluff were passed for export. One at Auckland and 31 at the Bluff Avere condemned. The total number graded was 285 as against 233 for the same period last year, an increase of 52 bales.
