FOXTON VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.
“My report will set out in detail the result of my official visit to the local brigade,” said Inspector Hugo to our representative, “but you can say that I am very pleased with the improvement noticeable since my last visit which should be gratifying to the brigade, citizens and Board.” Prior to inspecting the brigade, Inspector Hugo met the local members of the Fire Board and conferred with them in respect to the enrolment of fire police. He stated that the Fire Board had power to make a by-law for such purpose. It was a common occurrence at fires, where such a body of men were not enrolled, for pilfering to lake place. Apart from that there was a number of duties which could be .carried out and which would relieve the brigade, such as attending to the injured, keeping the crowd in check, taking control of a conflagration until the arrival of the brigade. It was essential that they be men of good standing in the community and resident in different quarters of the town. If such a body was "formed it would also give the" brigade its moral support and while in no way interfering with brigade affairs or administration could assist in a social way. He instanced the great assistance fire police had been in other centres, specially mentioning Wellington. He suggested that twelve or fourteen men would be ample in Foxton. Their services would be voluntary and they would be distinguished at a tire by an arm badge.
After several questions had been answered members decided to bring the matter up for discussion at next Board meeting.
Inspector Hugo also attended the Borough Council meeting and spoke on brigade matters.
