There was a representative attendance and the meeting was more in the form of a deputation to Mr Yeo. Mr. 11. Ilornblow, on behalf of the returned men said, that they were of opinion that something should be done to celebrate Anzac Day. As there was no Returned Soldiers’ organisation locally the returned men had got together and decided to wait on Mr. Yeo, who was the only ex-officer in town. Mr. Yeo was then voted to the chair. Tt was decided that a parade be held, (lie dress to be mufti and medals. The men will assemble at the Council Chambers at 3 p.m., and it was decided to march to the Soldiers’ Memorial in the Triangle. Decided to endeavour to get the local Fire Brigade, Band, and other war veterans to join in the procession. Mr B. Walls was authorised to procure a wreath to be placed on the merorial from the returned men. Mr Yeo was appointed to wait on the Mayor with a view to ascertaining what arrangements he was making for the occasion. It was suggested at the meeting that a service be held in the Triangle on Sunday afternoon, at 3.30 after which the wreaths will be placed on the memorial and the “Last Post” sounded.
NO HOLIDAY ON MONDAY. The question has,, arisen as to whether Monday next is to be observed as a holiday owing to Anzac Day falling on a Sunday. So far as is known, the hairdre-yers’ award is the only one which prescribes that a holiday must be observed, as Anzac Day is nut only included in the list of holidays to be observed, but there is a provision that when a holiday falls on a Sunday it must be observed on the Monday. The banks are to be closed, but Government offices, legal, and other offices will be open. Although hairdressers will be closed tobacconists do not come under the same provision. No general holiday will be observed.
