FOOTBALL .
IGA TOAS 16 v. FOXTON 3. The Kia Tons, Palmerston’s last year senior champions, gave the local seniors a “pipe opener” in a friendly match at Easton Park on Saturday and after a somewhat strenuous game—far too strenuous for the local seniors—resulted in a win for the visitors by 16 points to three. The teams were as follow: —Kia Toa: —McLean, Strange, Mullins (capt.), Walker, R. Wasloy, J. Wasley, Ayre, Ryan, Bodlt, Oxenham, Doherty, Rush, O’Keefe, Piper and Leeder. Foxton. —Kiriona, Procter, Taylor (capt.), Fuller, Moses, Noble, K. Ilii'ini, McDonald, Thompson, Krivasinko, Burdis,, Lorimer, Andrews, O’Reilly and Creswell. H. Reid took the place of Noble at half time, the latter retiring as a result of a kick on the ankle. The visitors were in better fettle than the home team and as a result kept the latter on the defensive, although in the scrum work the local team showed superiority. Leeder gave the spectators on several occasions an exhibition of his speed, which, however, was well countered when Reid made his appearance. Tries were obtained for the visitors by Walker, R. Wasley, Leeder and McLean, two of which were converted by Mullins. The visitors’ line was not crossed, but Moses piloted the ball over the bar from a mark.
Kiriona at full back was not in his right position, which is breakaway. Reid at centre three-quar-ter and Taylor at full would have improved matters for the home team, the former always plays a heady game and his appearance was both assistance and guidance to the team. Fuller on the wing, play ed a great game. Hirini’s first appearance at half in senior play was well justified and his nippy tactics will prove a thorn in the side of opponents this season. In fact it would not surprise me to see himineluded in rep. selection. The forwards are true battlers and when in condition will show their mettle to advantage. l McDonald, Cresswell and Krivashinko are great battlers. Saturday’s game, with the men unfit and a hard ground indicated that seniors under more favourable conditions and concerted action will prove a hard nut to crack. The game was played in the cor • rect spirit throughout, which I hope will be maintained throughout the season. Mi\ W. Neville controlled the game to the satisfaction of all. The game was played north and south, which does not allow a dead ball area, but overcomes the glare of the sun. THE DINNER. The visitors were entertained at a dinner at Walls’ tea rooms in the evening. Mr. H. Hutchins presided and in extending a welcome said the match had been appreciated by both the public and local team. He hoped arrangements could be made for a return match when possibly the tables would be turned. Such matches fostered a wider interest in the game and engendered a good spirit among the players who got to know each other, and some of them would probably play together in rep. games. He hoped the game between the two clubs would be an annual fixture (applause). Mr. Mullins, on behalf of the visitors, endorsed the chairman’s remarks re an annual fixture. He thanked the club for the fine game and excellent spirit in which it had been played and for the splendid hospitality extended to his team. In responding to the toast of the referee, Mr; Neville said the spirit evinced by the players made the work of the referee a pleasure. Mr. Crawford (Manawatu delegate) said the game had been very enjoyable. He hoped Foxton would not be disheartened by the result, as the visitors were in better training. His wish was that Foxton wouid win the championship this year, and that when next the two teams met it would be as a champion of champions game (applause). The usual toasts were drunk with musical honours.
OROUA DOWNS AND AWAITOU
DRAW. The junior match, played on the racecourse on Saturday, resulted in a drawn game, each team scoring !) points. Scott, Grammar and Groome scored for Oroua Downs, and McGregor (2) and Silk for Awahou. In the evening, at the Family Hotel, the visitors were entertained at a dinner, over which Mr. Fred Robinson presided. A happy social hour was spent and Mr. Cameron thanked the Awahou Club for its hospitality. KIA TOA THIRDS (8) v. FOXTON THIRDS (nil). The above teams met at Palmerston on Saturday and a very interesting game resulted, despite the score of Kia Toa. In the first spell Comber scored an unconverted try and just before the close of the game Loveday with a dodgy run crossed Foxton’s line and Weston converted. Through some misunderstanding the Foxton juniors, who travelled to Palmerston to play Kia Toa juniors, did not get a game and as a result were very disappointed. The Kia Toa secretary said he had not received any intimation of the visit and whatever had been done was without his knowledge. The
local secretary made a similar statement.
MANAWATU-HOROWHENUA UNION. The first annual meeting of the Manawatu/ -(Horowhenua Rugby Football Union was held at Levin on Sunday, Mr. A. Hannay presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. R. The Marlborough Rugby Union wrote asking for a match in return for the one which was played at Palmerston North by a touring Marlborough team in 1923. —The Committee could no! see its way to grant the request. The annual report stated the Union had affiliated about 1500 players in grade football under the jurisdiction of the four districts. Five representative .matches had been played, including one with Wellington against the New South Wales team. One win and four losses had been the result. Thirtyone players —19 backs and 12 forwards —had been selected from the union as representative players; of these, 15 were from Manawatu and 16 from Horowhenua. Thanks were due to the Manawatu and Horowhenua Referees’ Association, Drs. for valuable services to injured players, and the Police and Railway Department, for assistance in many ways. Five meetings had been held during the year —three in Palmerston North and two in Levin. The attendances had been exceptionally good and much beneficial work had been done. The balance-sheet showed that rceipts were £689 2s lid, as against expenditure of £548 7s Id, leaving a credit balancb of £l4O 15s lOd. There were no liabilities. Both the report and balancesheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr. 11. F. Gibbons; president, Mr J. J. O’Connor; vice-presidents, Messrs' A. Hannay (Manawatu), and W. N. Anderson (Horowhenua); treasurer, Mr. J. R. Hardie; secretary, Mr. J. B. Proud; management committee, Messrs. T. Collins, K. Eglinton, W. Carruthers, H. Crawford, W. Moynihan, F. Robinson and J. Casey; auditors, Messrs C. W. White and A. S. Faire; selectors, Messrs W. Dustin and M. Winiata. To aid the finances of both the Manawatu and Horowhenua Rugby Councils, it was decided that season tickets sold by either body should be recognised by the union at representative matches. FIXTURES. O’Connor being chairman, whilst Messrs Hannan, Procter, Brann, Moynilian, Emmett (Referees’ Association), Robson and the secretary (Mr. J. Casey) were also in attendance. Apologies were received from Messrs Rimmer, McDonald, Anderson, Austin, Lynch and Robinson. SEASON TICKETS. Following the discussion at the Man awa tu - Horo whenu a Union’s annual general meeting, relating to the issue of season tickets applicable to both districts, the management committee of the Horowhenua district discussed the matter, the chairman (Mr. J. J. O’Connor) saying the sale of such tickets would be a great gain to this district. Also, they would sell more readily than if they were available only to matches in the Horowhenua district.
Mr. Moyuihau moved: “That this union issues season tickets, at one guinea each, admitting each holder and one lady to any matches controlled by the Mauawatu-Horo-whenua Rugby Union.” Mr Emmett seconded the motion which was affirmed. Mr. Hannan asked whether Horowhenua ticket-holders at a rep. match in Palmerston would receive the same consideration as Mana-
watu ticket-holders in the way of reservations and other privileges, Mr. O’Connor informed Mr. Hannan that the conditions would be identical. CANVASSING PLAYERS. Foxton Club forwarded the following resolution: “That the Horowhenua Union Management Committee consider the advisability of preventing canvassers from going into other districts and taking players away from their residential clubs.” Mr. Emmett observed that nothing could be done as any action in this direction would mean the breaking-up of the County Club, which was recruited from all parts of the district. Mr. O’Connor concurred, adding that unless there was a charge of bribery the management committee could take no action. Mr. Hannan considered flint it was impossible to take definite ac-. tion until the union was spread into districts. GENERAL. It was resolved that the scheme of insurance in existence under the Horowhenua Rugby Union’s constitution remain in eceet throughout the season, and the conditions relating thereto be enforced. A letter Aims received from the Shannon Club advising that senior, junior, third and fourth grade teams would be entered by the club. —Received. RUGBY RESULTS.
