BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, presided over by His Worship the mayor (M. E. Perreau, Esq). Also present were Crs McMurray, Thompson, Adams, Walker, Parkin, Band, Cowley, Woods and Winstanley. Before commencing the general business, the Mayor congratulated the Councillors on the harmonious manner in which they had carired out the business of the Council during the past year. He was of opinion that the ratepayers were quite satisfiet with the Council they quite satisfied with the Council they had elected, and hoped that harmony would be the keynote during the coming year. REPORTS were read and dealt with as follows : WATER-WORKS REPORT. The Waterworks foreman (Mr. Wm. Neville) reported as follows : During the month sewers have been laid in Norbiton Road north, Russell and Jenks streets. This work is now completed except for washing out and channeling. It would be advisable not to allow any householder to be connected up with the system until this work has been carried out. Since the completion of the sewerage work the foreman has been engaged in meter reading and stock taking. Pumping Station Report. —During the month 1,650,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current consumed being 40 amps. The reason for the increase in amperage is that the pump had-to be kept going for 23 hours owing to the Town Hall fire. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. The road foreman (Mr. Huntley) reported that during the past month the road staff had been engaged on the following works: — Widening intersection of Russell and Patrick streets, cleaning up debris after Town Hall .fire, levelling ground in connection with temporary hall, taking up culvert and relaying same in Russell street, cleaning drains Jenks and Coley streets, weeding water channels Wharf street, filling in drain on south side of Jenks St., after water and drainage work, and general maintenance work. —Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: —
From Mr. A. Fowler, Norbiton Road, complaining about damage done to his property by the water and drainage gang while laying the Norbiton Road sewer. Also stating that as a result of this work a walnut tree had fallen. Mr. Fowler stated that he was prepared to put the property in order himself for £5.
The Mayor reported that the water works foreman was undertaking the repair of a fence damaged on Mi’ Fowler’s property. Cr. Walker suggested replacing the walnut tree with another one. Or. McMurray said that the tree was alongside the drain and had fallen into it. It was not dead and if it was hauled back into position Mr. Fowler would be quite satisfied.
Decided to leave the matter in the hands of Cr. Woods. From the Prime Minister, asking for the Council’s co-operation in a public appeal to raise money for the purpose of endowing the New Zealand bed in the Rockefeller Hospital in London. —'Received.
GENERAL.
Decided to order 100 yards of Rangitikei crushed metal to be used on Coley Street. It was reported that owing to dog registration fees not coming to hand, the inspector was compelled to take legal proceedings for their recovery. Cr. Cowley brought up the question of kerbside benzine pumps and asked that some finality be reached in connection with this matter. Cr. Parkin saw no objection to their installation. “They are all over the place in Wellington,” he said. .. The matter is to be finally decided on Monday, 26th April. Decided that Mr. P. J. Jack be notified that in view of his failure to carry out the terms of delivery laid down in the acceptance of his quotation for the supply of theatre seats, any seats, if passed as satisfactory, delivered by 5 p.m. on Friday next 16th April, be paid for, and that” balance of the contract be cancelled. The question of providing seats for the hall was left in the hands of the Clerk.
