PASSING OF AN OLD SETTLER.
JAMES MURPHY, AGED
83 YEARS.
There passed away at his daughter’s (Mrs Oliver) residence Castlecliff, Wlanganui on Monday, James Murphy aged 83 years. The late Mr. Murphy was born in Auckland and was one of the fast diminishing band of pioneers. He took part in the Maori wars and could relate some stirring incidents of the pioneering days. For a time he resided in Dunedin and for 17 years was associated with the Dunedin Fire Brigade, part of which time he was captain. He took an active part in various branches of sport. Latterly he resided in Wellington and at the time of his death was on a visit to his daughter. The deceased leaves a son (Mr. Herbert Murphy, of Wellington) and daughter (Mrs J. Oliver, of Castlecliff Wanganui) and a sister (Airs George Coley senior, of Foxton) to mourn their loss. The interrment look place at Wellington on Tuesday.
