FOOTBALL.
BERIIAMPORE (6) v. FOXTON (5).
At the racecourse on Saturday Berhampore (Wellington) juniors defeated the local Foxton juniors by 6 points to 5 after a very interesting game. Marsh scored for Foxton and the try was converted by Ilirini. Berhampore scored a try and penalty goal. Mr. Walls of Wellington controlled the game.
The teams were as follows: —
Berhampore: Fullback Charles, threequarters, Avery Kelly and Nicholls; five-eights, Bretts and Lane; half, Harris; wing-forward, Dickson, hookers, Dutch and Mollier; forwards Griffen, Cox, Spearman (captain), Ayres, iOoll; W. Murray (manager). Foxton: Fullback, Walls; threequarters, Procter, Hartley, Huff; five-eights Hirini (captain), Fuller; half, Shortt; wing-forward. Fuller; forwards, Hakaraia, Moses, Elers, Anderson, Scott, Huff Shaw. THE DINNER. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a dinner by the local club at Walls’ tea-rooms. Mr. H, Hutchins (president of the local club) presided and accorded a welcome to the visiting team. Mr Murray (manager of the visiting team) expressed pleasure at once again visiting Foxton. The team had happy memories of its previous visit, and they were deeply grateful for the splendid hospitality extended to them. He hoped that the club would send a team to Wellington on June 3rd. He could assure them of a good game and the visitors would be given an opportunity of returning the splendid hospitality extended to them. He was glad to know that the professional game had been scotched in Foxton and that good old Rugby was not to be ousted.
Mr. Spearman (captain) referred to the fine sporting spirit of the Foxton team and said the game had been most enjoyable. He also congratulated Foxton on getting rid of the League game. They were all proud of the national game which was Rugby, and which always included Pakcha and Maori players. He assured Foxton of a real good time if they visited Wellington on June 3rd. The chairman, in his reply, said (hat the League game would never, in his opinion, get a hold in Foxton again. He assured the visitors that Foxton would look forward with pleasure to a return match on June 3rd. He hoped the visitors would enjoy their stay in Foxton. Mr. Hirini (Foxton captain) said his team had thoroughly enjoyed the game and would look forward to another match on June 3rd. The taost list included “The King,” “Referee,” “Press,” “Ladies” “hosts and hostesses.”
The visitors were then entertained at a dance in the Masonic Hall and returned to Wellington yesterday. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT.
The local thirds sent two teams to Levin on Saturday to compete in the seveu-a-side tournament. The A team came off victorious, with B. team runners-up. The following were the local teams: A team. —A. Stevenson (captain), H. Ross, N. Ball, S. Wright, R. Hartley, E. Cunnighame, W- Newth. B team.— R. Hussey (qaptain), L. Royal, J. Delany, J. Barber, S. Pullun, N. Westwood, B. Aldridge.
