The Wanganui Education Board staff are carrying out additions to the local headmaster’s residence.
As a result of Vaninnia falling in the hurdle race at Bulls yesterday, the jockey I. Tilson broke a leg*, There died at Palmerston North Hospital last night, after a brief ilness, a man known locally as “Sailor” Lawson. The deceased had been employed in this district for some years.
Mr. E. Cowley intends to leave for a trip to England by the Remucra on May 22nd. He will be absent for about four months. Mr. Cowley's object in making' the trip is to visit his mother in Hereford, who he has not seen since leaving England in 1905.

Rain Cell in torrents locally on Tuesday night. In fact the downfall was more in the nature of a cloud hurst. Minor damage was done in a number of dwellings and business places by I he storm water. The rain guage at the local post oflice registered two inches and then overtlowed. It is safe to say that the fall registered 21 inches. At a meeting of the Manawalu automobile association, held at Palmerston on Tuesday, the Wairflrqpn Automobile Club wrote complaining about two bad turns entering Poston from Palmerston North. —The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Poston Borough Council with a view to having some impro veinent effected. Walker, jocularly remarked at Tuesday night’s Borough Council meeting that he was a Lancashire man and Lancashire people were reported to be superstitious. In view of the fact that a lire had, on two occasions destroyed the public reading-room and library which had been attached to the municipal buildings, he did not feel disposed to support Cr. McMumiy’s motion to have these institutions attached to the Town Hall.

There was an amusing interlude at. Tuesday night's Borough Council meeting. Cr. MeMurrav. who sits opposite Cr. Adams, rose to speak, holding aloft between his lingers a lighted cigarette. Cr. Adams with the austerity of a judge in passing sentence rose, paused and said: Your Worship, J object to Cr. McMnr ray addressing the Council while smoking." There was a brief pause while the two councillois gitzen into each others eyes, then C'r, McMumiy exploded: “Sit down I’ve got the floor," The statuesque humour of the incident was worthy of a setting in the movies!
