THE MEASURE OF LIFE.
Life is more surely measured by thought than by emotion. Emotion can be on evanescent thing; but if it be linked to thought, it makes up the sum of what we call life, and which other-wise would be mere existence. For the animals arp capable of emotion, even as we. It is thought that gives us our only justification for our assertion that we are higher than the animals. Nay, it is only our highest thought that so lifts us to that higher level. It is a common thing to hear it said of a violently emotional person—“ How that woman (or man) has lived.” But they have not lived unless l hose violent emotions have been garnered into the experience that is thought. The little woman- in the remote dwelling, who blesses her neighbour with kindly acts, who tends her garden and learns the wisdom of the fruitfull earth, has more truly lived than the actress v.lio mouths her lines, and who has never lifted her eyes higher than the limeligt.
