BOWLING.
VISIT FROM OTAKI CLUB TO-MORROW.
Word was received from Otaki yesterday that three rinks from that Club desired to pay a return visit to Foxton bowlers, and accordingly the Otaki bowlers will be present on the local green to-morrow afternoon. In view of this, members and croquet players are asked to bring a basket to assist willi the catering arrangements. All bowlers are requested to be in attendance prompt to facilitate the arranging of rinks for play.
In beautiful weather the final of the Manawatu Bowling Centre’s annual champion of champions pairs tourney was played on the Terrace End Club’s green on Saturday afternoon, the contestants being Boss and Herdman (Feilding) and Allen and Davidson [Terrace End). The home pair early found the strength of the green, which was playing very fast, and the visitors scored on only four of the first fifteen heads, at the conclusion of which Terrace End led by 21 to 7. Facing apparent defeat, the Feilding pair played much better howls from then on, and took five at the last six heads, but Terrace End’s lead in the opening stages proved too big a handicap for them, and the game ended 24 to 17 in favour of the home pair. EASTER RINKS TOURNEY. Forty-one rinks have entered for the Easter Tournament at Palmerston North. One rink from Foxton, skipped by Thomson has nominated. Challengers for the Kinneburgh Feathers come and go with monotonous regularity, each week recording one club or other that is anxious to wrest the trophy from Levin. Saturday marked the fourteenth occasion upon which the holders have been called upon to defend their right of retaining the Feathers since the Club annexed them from Otaki, last year. Shannon was the latest competitor, but the home team had too much in reserve, and the visitors were defeated with a score of 27 —15 against them. They were represented by Bovis, Brann, B. Spencer and E. Spencer .(s), whilst the rink whichvanquished the Shannon men consisted of I J yke, Brown, Bull and Suhau (s).
Each club has its adherents and supporters whose unselfish attention to the club’s well-being is a beacon light to their fellow-mem-bers. Of such are Mrs de Malmanche and Mr. W. Bull, whose approaching marriage was on Saturday made the subject of congratulatory reference when Mr. Pyke, Club President, presented them with a silver entree dish, the presentation being made on behalf of the club members and the ladies’ committee. The promotion of the club’s social side by Mrs de Malmanche and the popularity of Mr. Bull, both as a past-president and an old member of the club, and their many tine attributes were also referred to by the President, the undoubted esteem in winch they are held by their fellow-clubmen beign retiected in the applause accompanying the presentation. Mr. Bovis, President of the Shannon Club made ail appropriately humorous speech in which he tendered the recipients a few words of an observer’s advice. Mr. Bull aptly responded, after which the assemblage all sang “For they are jolly good fellows.” —Chronicle.
