Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 1926. CHEER UP!
UNDER, the above heading the Mercantile Gazette mildly castigates the folk who “assume the gift of prophecy and adopt the mantle of Jeremiah,” and remarks that “they are never happier than when preaching woe to those who listen, and they often have neither the knowledge, the ability, nor the judgment to give the slightest value to any forecast they may make of the possible course of future events.” The Gazette explains that its remarks are the result of irresponsible persons-going about with melancholy looks _ and uttering the most lugubrious statements, about some dreadful calamities, financial and commercial, which are expected to operate during the coming winter. While admitting that the year will not supply record shipments and that prices for our commodities will not reach exceptional levels,'the Gazette points out that such will not mean disaster. There is plenty of money in the country, and though mortgage money is and must be difficult to obtain, the stock and share market shows that good investments are always in demand. The Wellington commercial journal thinks it quite possible that people, will not have so much money to spend this\ycar as last, but “in the meantime the grass will continue growing'on our pastures, the sheep will give up their wool clip next November, as usual, while butter, cheese, and frozen meat will still till our Homeward ships.” The Gazette’s experience is that the optimist, not the pessimist, is generally the one who comes out right in the lona mn.
