ARTICHOKES FOR PIGS.
The high feeding values of artichokes are apparent in the following results secured for an experiment conducted at the Hawkesbury Agricultural college, some time ago. Fifty-nine store pigs were turned into an acre of artichokes. ihe average live weight of the pigs was 801 b, or a total of 4721 b. The pigs attacked the grazing in a vigorous fashion, and relished the diet. In addition, they received daily lewt shredded maize stalks, IA-cwt rape, Ovwt pumpkins, jewt cabbage leaves and 23 gallons of skim milk. Forty days later they had almost exhausted the crop, and were removed and weighed. Enough roots were left undisturbed to grow the following season’s crop. The gross live weight of the 59 pigs was 70311 b, an average increase of 391 b per pig in 40 days, and a total increase of 2311 b of pork.
Give artichokes a trial this season . Select a corner of the farm that is producing nothing at present, taking care, if possible, choose a well-sheltered situation.
