BRITISH HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION SHIP.
London, March 18,
At the Albert Hall, in a twentyrounds bout for the heavyweight championship of Britain, Phil Scott knocked out Frank Goddard (the holder) in the third round.
Scott in the first round .demonstrated that he was too fast for Goddard, who was painfully slow. In the second round Scott forced matters, but ran into a left, which floored him. However, he managed to weather the round. In the third Goddard opened agressively, but left himself open to Scott’s left, which Scott followed up by a right to the jaw, outing Goddard.
After the match Scott said: “The result makes me champion of Great Britain. I am prepared to defend the title against all comers, but my great ambition is to fight Dempsey for the world’s championship.” In a fifteen-round heavyweight contest, Tom Heeney beat Charley Smith, who was disqualified in the sixth round.
