Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 1926. SHANNON’S RETIRING MAYOR.
SHAKESPEARE wrote something to the affect that “the good a man does is oft interred with his hones.” The action of the good people of Shannon in connection with the retirement of Mr. W. Murdoch, as Mayor, owing to ill-health, is one of the exceptions to the immortal hard’s quotation. They rallied round their fellow townsmen the other night and paid tribute to his years of
faithful service and sacrifice for the good of the community in which ho resided and presented him with some tangible expression of their esteem in the form of a well filled wallet and the wish that with (ho cares of office laid aside, his health would he restored, and that he would spend many years of happy retirement and that he would at some time revisit Shannon, in the hearts of whose citizens he would always hold a warm place. In reply Mr Murdoch said when he found lie could no longer carry on the duties he laid down the trust. We would just like to add our endorsement* of the splendid service rendered by
Mr. Murdoch to the sick and need) as a member of the Palmerstor Hospital Board. In this connectioi the district has lost a faithful nnc sympathetic administrator —a rea' friend to the poor and distressed In civic affairs he was a man of
vision and Shannon • made progressive strides under his guidance and unbounded enthusiasm. We hope that a well-earned rest will restore him to his wonted health.
