MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Manawalu County Council was held at Saudon on Tuesday when there were present: Sir Janies Wilson (in the chair), and Mrs H. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, W. E. Barber, W. S. Penny, H. J. Eagan and J. F. McKelvie. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Works Department advising that from time to time applications for road grants for metalling purposes were being received from local bodies, but the issuing of the necessary monetary authority was being held up as the recommendations as set out in a circular memo of March 4 were not being complied with. The department had now adopted the policy, before authorising commencement of metalling works, in which the Government was financially interested, of requiring from local bodies an undertaking, supported by a resolution of the county concerned, agreeing to annually provide from their revenue funds sufficient moneys to maintain the newly metalled road in a manner satisfactory to the department. —Received.

From the Rangitikei County Council advising that, prior to the Main Highways Board issuing the new warrant for the maintenance of the Bulls bridge, it was necessary for the Manawatu Council and the writers to each agree to bear 50 per cent, of the locaj. bodies’ share of the cost. The Rangitikei Council had, at its last meeting, passed a motion to such effect. —The clerk mentioned that the county had already expressed agreement, it being however, decided that a copy of the motion be forwarded to Main Highways Board, From the Moutoa Drainage Board thanking the council for its intention to subsidise the Moutoa stopbank to the extent of £ls. —Received.

From Mr, F. C. ltaikes, Oroua Downs, applying for a truck of crushed metal, also requesting that the tramway crossing fronting his entrance be given attention. —Left in the hands of the engineer. From Mi'. W. Renton making application on behalf of Mi’. E. D. Barber for 10 of the 30ft. electric light poles lying opposite the Himatangi saleyards and for which the applicant was prepared to pay £2 each. —The offer was refused, it being decided to advise the writer that such poles were sold at £2 10s TITERATION TO RATE ROLL. The following alterations to the rate roll were authorised: —John Palmer Ito F. S. Guy, pt. rural section 131, Township of Sandon; F. Yanko to Mary B. Sim, allotment 27 on D.P. 122, pt. sec. 315 and lot 20 and pt. lot 25 of pt sec. 310, Carnarvon; S. Thompson to W. C. Scott, 10 acres 1 rood 12.8 perches, lot 11-19, 30-30, 38-40 and 48-01, all inclusive, on D.P. 1179 pt. section 384, township of Carnarvon; F. L. McKinnon to R, V. Burgess pt. sec. 37, block XV., Rangitoto D.D., E. S. Whitehouse to A. A. Mitchell, pt. lots 24 and 25 D.P. 514 and pt. sec. 384, township of Sandon; executors of the estate of Ereni lvopu to Henry O. Barber, Puketotara, 2 B 1 and Puketotara 2 82, section 2. GENERAL. It was decided that 10 per centum additional would be charged on all rates outstanding after the 23rd inst The action of Or. Barber and the engineer in accepting the tender of Messrs. J. G. Coley for supplying and delivering metal on the Whirokino road at 6s 8d per yard was agreed to. , ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer reported on the work carried out during the month. Awabou: The contractors have delivered 292 cubic yards of metal on Foxton-Shannon road between the Foxton borough boundary and the Whitanui flaxmill gate since the beginning of the year. The total cost of road metal and maintenance for the first two months of this year for the above length of road is £292. The repairs which have just been completed are only temporary if the present traffic continues and a much larger quantity of metal will be required to build up the road durum the winter season. " TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The traffic inspector reported that, since last meeting of the council, he had been engaged in patrolling the county, while he had made a start in collectng this year’s dog tax. Last court day at Bulls three offenders for allowing stock to be at large were fined 10s each, •while one lorry driver for failing to have a reflector attached to his vehicle was fined 20s and costs, and one lorry driver for failing to keep to his proper side of the road was fined 20s and costs. During last month complaint was made that certain lorry drivers were carrying passengers in excess of the number they were licensed to carry. As a result of enquiries informations will be laid against several drivers for alleged breaches of the motor regulations and will be heard on the 19th inst at Foxton.— Adopted. TRAMWAY REPORT. The tramway manager reported: -—The chief items of traffic for the month were: Mineral and manure, 150 tons; merchandise, 401 tons; grain, .21 tons; stock, 41 trucks; wool, 98 bales; eggs, 112 crates; timber, 4700 superficial feet. Fares amounted to £1 5s 6d. The accounts show a debit of £36 10s Jd for the month’s working. —Adopted.
