The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 1926. LICENSING BENCH ELECTIONS.
LICENSING Bench elections, except in extraordinary circumstances, are a waste of the ratepayers money. In several constituencies elections are being held to-day which could have been avoided but for the apparent unreasonable attitude of certain candidates. The Prohibition Party and Licensed Victuallers in almost every constituency come to an amicable arrangement in reference to the nomination of candidates and as these two parties are directly interested the appointments should be left in their hands. As the law stands, however, it is open for any elector outside these parties to incur unnecessary expense. The Act should be amendded to provide for the appointment of two persons to sit with the Magistrate and adjudicate upon matters coming within the scope of - the Act. Much, if not all of the business which comes before the Bench, could be adjudicated upon by the Magistrate alone.
