FIVE POUNDS FINE.
ALLEGED DANGEROUS DRIVING.
At the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before- Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., Thomas Dixon, farmer, of Rongotea, was charged that, on December 24, he did drive a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public. John Campbell Gibbons, farmer, of Rongotea, gave evidence that he was driving across the Oroua bridge between Palmerston North and Rongotea on the day mentioned in the charge, and that, on defendant coming on to the structure, lie (witness) had stopped and pulled to one side, but defendant had crashed into him. James Mclvelvie, farmer of Carnarvon, the owner of the ear the previous witness had been driving, deposed that he had been sitting in the back seat, and that defendant bad not pulled up, but had crashed straight into the stationary car. The collision was a head on one.
In evidence, defendant said that both cars had hit the bridge together, and that, when he had seen the other vehicle, he had put the foot-brake on, but it failed to pull the car up.
“Anyone who comes on to a bridge' so fast that he can’t stop when another ear is stationary two lengths from the other end is, in my opinion driving in a manner dangerous to the public,” said the Magistrate imposing a line of £5, with costs 225.
