CHILDREN ILL-TREATED .
W[IDOWBR ARRESTED. Christchurch, February 10. In tne Magistrate’s Court to-day George Arthur Evans was convicted and ordered to come up when called upon within twelve months on a charge of ill-treating his two sous, aged 11 and 13. The police evidence showed that the children had been thrashed and kicked, and that their bodies were badly bruised. Evans said that bis wife died recently, leaving him with nine children, their ages ranging from .19 years to 10 months. The eldest girl had left home. The Magistrate, Mr. H. A. Young, said that accused had to work hard, and his lot was harder than the ordinary man to bear. He took that into consideration in determining the penalty. An application foi suppression of defendant s name was refused.
