HEMP MARKET

JANUARY GRADING RETURNS 0~

The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripptr slips for the month of January have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —

The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are:—

Twenty-one bales at Picton were graded line. Fourteen bales at Auckland, 68 at Wellington, and 111 at Fox ton and 14 bales at Bluff were condemned.. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the coresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Fine 21 (23), good fair 637 (1003), high fair 4452 (4257), low fair 2930 (2423), common fair 307 (391), rejected 193 (298), condemned 14 (3), a total of 8554 bales as against 8398 graded the same period last year, an increase of 156 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 1940, Wellington 2880, Foxton 2072, Wairoa 142, Picton 64, Blenheim 115, Dunedin 105, Pt. Chalmers 113, Bluff 1096, Lyttleton 29. , The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —

Twenty bales at Auckland, 10 at Foxton, 21 at Wellington, and 27 at the Bluff, were condemned. The following shows .the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis. Ist grade 394 (280), 2nd grade 1846 (1497), 3rd grade 393 (341), condemned 78 (73), a total of 2711 bales as against 2191, an increase of 520 bales. The number of bales graded at. each port were:—Auckland 735, Foxton 441, Wellington 569, Wairoa 20, Picton 36, Blenheim 54, Dunedin 25, Pt. Chalmers 48, Bluff 783. Stripper Slips Eighteen bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade, 37 at Auckland, 22 at Foxton, 4 at Wellington, and 84 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade, and 14 at Auckland, 64 at Foxton, 54 at Wellington 10 at Wairoa, and 116 at the Bluff were passed for export. Forty-two bales at Auckland were condemned and also 18 from Wellington and 7 from the Bluff. ie total number graded was 490 as against 190 for. the same period last year, an increase of 300 bales. Stripper Tow :—Thirty-two bales at Wellington wer egraded Ist grade, 96 at Wellington and 98 at Foxton were graded 2nd, and 5 at Wellington were graded 3rd making a total of 221 bales as against 200 graded last year, being an increase of 21 bales.

The High Commissioner’s cable, dated the 6th inst., reads:— Hemp Manila market, quiet but steady, “J” grade, February-April shipments, sold at £45. Sisal firmer, buyers No. 1 £45 to £45/10/0. New Zealand market steady and value unchanged, high ponits £39, fair £37, January-March and Feb-ruary-April shipments.
