THE LOCAL PORT.

Mr. S. Jickell, late engineer to the Foxlon Harbour Board, informed our representative yesterday, that in his opinion the local port and river did not present the same obstacles for improvement as at Wanganui. Not nearly the same amount of money would be required locally as was expended at Wanganui in the construction of training walls. Realising the importance of their port the Wanganui authorities had experienced no difficulty in raising the money required for improvements. “I have previously stated,” said Mr. Jickell “that a light railway could be constructed from the Fox!on borough to the Heads at a cost not exceeding £IO,OOO as the formation for such work presents no difficulties.” In the opinion of Mr. Jickell the local port, under improved conditions, could be made of great commercial benefit to the whole district
