Reports the Wanganui “Herald.” —On several occasions during the past couple of months a mysterious small steamer with lights out has been seen cruising close to the Rangitikei beach, on one occasion being so close in that campers lit a signal lire as a warning. The mysterious stranger is supposed to be a trawler that was surreptitiously working the local lishing grounds. ( Mr G. L. Petersen, advance manager for Worths’ Circus, is an enthusiastic fisherman and his greatest pleasure when time permits is fo cast a line. While in Foxton on Saturday he indulged in his hobby on the wharf until lie met with a painful accident. One of t lie hooks penetrated his linger and its extraction needed surgical attention. The mishap was more than compensated for by the fact that lie had previously landed six herrings! Last Friday the annual picnic of the Palmerston North wood and coal merchants was held at the local beach. Twelve motor lorries, carrying approximately 300 passengers, left Pelmerston North early in the morning, and good weather was experienced until arrival at the seaside resort. Through the courtesy of Captain Larsen, luncheon was partaken of in the beach hall and later, for the greater part of the afternoon, dancing was indulged in. Lollies, toys and fruit were distributed to the children, who were well looked after. With a break in the feather late in the afternoon some of the picnickers went fishing and, with herrings running in large numbers, followed by kawhai, some good catches were obtaied. Unfortunately, one of the fishermen had the misfortune to gel

a hook caught in his hand and had to receive medical treatment. A number of the picnickers took advantage of an offer by the matron of the Alf Saints’ Beach Home to look over the institution, and were well- pleased with what they saw.
