NEARLY A SMASH.

QUEENSLAND MAIL TRAIN. DISASTER JUST AVERTED. BRISBANE. Jan. 7. The crowded northern «inil train was within five or six yards of disaster yesterday when it- pulled up that much short oi a stationary train at Eudlo, near Nambour. A train from Gyinpie liad drawn into the siding at Eudlo, but it was too long. Almost immediately afterwards the northern mail came into view. 'l'he stationary train commenced a continuous blast on its whistle, while a railway official frantically waved his arms. Fortunately the driver ot the mail became aware of the danger, and brought the train to a standstill with a scrcacliing of brakes, just in time to prevent a smash. The mail train had about 100 passengers aboard. Owing to heavy rains in the southern and northern parts of (he State, several trains have been hold up by washaways. At Pinkilly, five miles from Rockhampton-, the country yesterday was a sea of water.
