TENNIS.

The finals of the men’s singles and ladies’ doubles championships were played at the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club’s tourney yesterday. E. D. Andrews retained his title, while Misses Marjorie MacFarlane and M. Lowry are the new lady doubles champions.

There are still 41 matches to be played to-day, including eight finals.

Great interest was shown in the final of the men’s championship singles between Bartlett and Andrews. The hardest light in the history of local tennis was played —altogether 56 games being played before Andrews came home the winner. Careful playing on both sides drew the game out to nearly three hours. The scores for the sets were 11-9, 4-6, 14-12. Scores of local players participating were: —Ladies’ Singles (Championship): —Miss E. Owen was defeated by Miss Ilaggitt 6-0, 6-2.

Ladies’ Doubles: —Misses Owen and P. Me Murray defeated Misses Daniell and MacDonald 8-6, 8-1, in the first round and were themselves defeated by Misses Astle and Shepherd, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round.

Mixed Doubles: —C. Procter and Miss McMarray defeated Wills and Miss Powdrell 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and McMurray and Miss Owen were defeated by Brandon and Miss Guy 7-5, 6-0. In the third round Procter and Miss McMurray were defeated by Andrews and Mi’s Smith 6-1, 0-4.' Handicap Events. Men’s singles: —it. McMurray (15 3-6) was defeated by Wills (owe 15 1-6) in the second round.

Ladies’ Singles: —In the fourth round Miss Owen (20) was defeated by Miss Welsh (5) 50-39. Mixed Doubles: —R. McMurray and Miss Owen (15 3-6) won from R Hooper and Miss Cameron (owe 2-6), 9-3, in the first round and were themselves defeated in the second round by B. P. Which and Miss D. Haggitt (owe 4-6) in the second round. Score 9-6. It. Bradly and .Miss J. McMurray (15) were defeated in the first round 9-1.
