THE SHANNON PUNT.

AN UNSATISFACTORY ARRANGEMENT.

Much dissatisfaction is being expressed by those who are compelled to use the punt at the Shannon Bridge in order to cross the Manawatu river and reach Shannon. The punt cannot be worked with a fresh in the river and similarly at low tide there is not sufficient water at that location to enable the punt to reach the landing stages on either side of the river. Consequently traffic on the Foxton-Shan-non road is held up for hours on end. One motorist, who had come to Fox ton from Levin this morning and intended making his way back via Shannon was informed on arrival at the punt at 9 a.m. that there was not sufficient water in the river to enable a crossing to be made and that “there might be. enough by 4 o’clock this afternoon.” He was thus compelled to return to Foxton and go to Shannon via Koputaroa. He told our representative that it would not be so bad if some method of notifying the travelling public that the punt was out of action was employed to save motorists and others going all the way out to the bridge to find out that they were unable to cross the river.
