Air. J. A. Hofmann’s business premises in Alain Street had a narrow escape from being destroyed by lire last- Tuesday afternoon. A fire was lighted in the open lire place in ihe workroom at (lie rear of the shop about 3.30 p.m. and was left unattended for a short while, when it was noticed that a pile of shavings near by had become ignited and were burning fiercely. A bucket brigade was quickly organised and the outbreak subdued But for the assistance of many willing helpers a serious outbreak would have resulted.
