NEWS AND NOTES.
. —* An unusual skull was unearthed near Manakau a few days ago by Mr 11. Fielding . The bone is solid and heavy for its size and was found in previously undisturbed soil supposed at one time to have been the bed of the Wlaikawa stream. It is about seven inches long and narrow in comparison, being only three inches across, with a very large eye socket. Two very sharp teeth are in front, then several smaller teeth seem to be worn away, with double teeth at the back. Mr. F. E. Parker, to whom Mr Fielding showed this remarkable object, has forwarded it to the Curator of the Dominion Museum for identification.
A young lady, whilst walking along the bank of the hydro-elec-tric lake, found a splendid Maori axe, reports a Taranaki paper. This is the second Maori relic she has found in that locality. At various times, many Maori relics have been found in the sand hills near by. During the excavation of the cliff side for the power-house a valuable greenstone tiki was found. A good many persons have sought for the box. of sovereigns that the early Maoris took from the ill-fated Lord Wolseley, but have not been successful. One local native claims that, he knows the area where the natives hid the treasure, and believes the gold sovereigns will one day be found in a rata tree stump in the area that he himself sometimes explores.
