Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1925. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Those present at last' night’s Council meeting were: —His Worship the Mayor (M. E. Perreau, Esq.) and Crs. Walker, Thompson, Woods, Winstanley, Rand, Parkin, McMurray. An apology was received from Cr. Cowley. Local diggers have received the following reply to a congratulatory telegram forwarded Mr. Coates on his success at the election: “Warmly appreciate congratulations of Foxton Diggers. lam deeply grateful for the goodwill extended to me by my comrades, which I hope and will always retain. Kia Ora.—J. G. Coates.”

At the Town Hall last evening the Asquiths, vocalists and imitators, appeared in conjunction with the ordinary picture programme. These two artists proved themselves very entertaining, and their efforts were well received. In addition to vocal solos and duets, the couple entertained the audience with humorous dialogue and stories, and Mr. Asquith gave a splendid exhibition in imitation of the calls of various birds and animals. Probably many motorists are not .aware of the fact that if they drop a bottle on the roadway it is their duty to go back and pick up the pieces. A reminder was given to this effect at the Haminlton Court, when a youthful motor-cyclist admitted that after accidentally dropping a bottle from his machine in Victoria Street, leaving broken glass strewn over the carriage way, lie had neglected to £-n back and gather up the remnants. .As the prosecution was Use first of its kind in Hamilton, he was let off with the payment of costs, 7s.

A very enjoyable concert was held in the Presbyterian schoolroom last week. The ha'll was crowded with an appreciative* audience. Those taking part were: Misses Delany, Hoffman, M. Patterson, K. Martin, M. Downes and Mesdames Pedersen, Downes and Messrs. Earle, Baron, Downes, Chalk, Tongs and Rev. McDonald. Every item was much enjoyed and 1 he concert was voted a great success. The choir is grateful to Miss Delany, who so ably acted as accompanist and to Mrs Downes who organised the concert. “One of (lie rumours circulated about me is that 1 threw my teeth away to get off Gallipoli,” said Mr. W. E. Leadley (a Reform candidate for Avon) at a returned soldiers’ meeting at 'Christchurch. IA striking jn'oof of the falsehood of the rumour was forthcoming (says the Press). Lieutenant Crampton, who was present arose and said: Mr. Learley was my sergeant on the Peninsula, and when he lost his .teeth I ordered- him back to the base. He refused to go, and I have seen him sucking bac-on, and grinding biscuits between two stones, and moistening the crumbs with jam. All I can say is that the statement is a d 'lie! (Applause).
