ROAD PORE-MAN’S REPORT. During the past month the road staff has been engaged on the following work: —Discharging Belmont chips in yard, patching ruts, Sandon Rd. and Union street; grading roads in the various streets of the Borough, cleaning footpath Hall St., top dressing Main St., cleaning Main St., and general maintenance. One day was put in with the road grader for the Manawatu County Council. The road grader was used on practically all of the Borough roads but it .was impossible to work on Reeve St., owing to the rubbish on the road. This also prevented it being ploughed prior to grading. The grass from Hall St. footpath lias heen cleaned away and it is proposed giving the path a surface of cinders similar to Russell St. The work of top-dressing Main St. is still somewhat hampered by broken weather, but it is carried on
when ever possible. When this is completed attention will be given Johnston and Russell Streets. —Adopted.
In connection with Reeve Street, Cr. Thompson reported that it- was impossible to grade the street as the lupins had been cut and not grubbed out and the cut lupins were piled on the centre of the road. , Cr. Rand said there was some misunderstanding in connection with the road. The residents of
Reeve Street were under the im- " . pression that the Council would make the road on the south side if they cleared that, which had been done. The Clerk reported that the Council had kept faith with the residents of Reeve Street but they were not ready for the grader. Lupin roots had since been grubbed out. »» The Mayor stated that the road would be graded as soon as the grader was available again. It was now out of the district. The report ws adopted. Cr. Thompson brought up the question of putting a tar-sealed path from gate to gate at the cemetery.—Referred to the Road Foreman to report on the matter. CORRESPONDENCE. - was read and dealt with as follows : From the secretary of the Foxton State School Committee, stating that the Committee is endeavouring to obtain suitable rooms for the temporary housing of the classes of the proposed District High School. The Presbyterian and Anglican churches have granted the use of their schoolrooms at a nominal rent of 10/- per week each. The Committee would be pleased if the Council could see its way clear to assist the Committee by making a grant of 2/6 per week for each room as the Educational Department is not willing to pay a big rent and unless local assistance was obtainable the opening of a District High School might-be delayed for another year. The Mayor recommended the adoption of the recommendation, and further outlined the position.
j After considerable discussion it was decided to accede to the request for a term not. exceeding two years,® or until provision is made by the Education Board for a District High School. Decidedto add 10 per cent, to all rates not paid by December 10th 1925.
