Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1925. THE ELECTIONS.

THE great political fight lias now ended and all that remains is to a wait with patience the final returns of the various electorates throughout the Dominion.' So far as the available figures are concerned, the position of Parties'is sufficiently established to show that the Coates Government will be returned with a large majority in flu* House. Some of the seats at present are in doubt, owing to the ('lose polling, and the number of absent voters yet to be returned. The results show without a dohut that the country has great confidence in Mr Coates as a party lender, and in his programme as the right kind of policy for a Dominion like our own.( We have not the slightest doubt that the Coates Government will justify the confidence that has been reposed in it, and that New Zealand will progress, along the right lines, and also that at the end of the term the. electors of this Dominion will be well satisfied with the national administration. As the figures stand, Reform has a bio- absolute majority over all other parties, and should have no difficulty whatever in carrying out their programme so far as financial circumstances will permit.

IN this electorate the campaign was conducted cleanly, and the candidates concerned are to be complimented on this score. To Mr. Linklater, the Reform candidate, we extend our congratulations, and we feel sure he is in earnest when he says that during the next three years he will pay the closest attention to this district’s requirements, and confirm the confidence that has been reposed in him. • To Mr. Roberts we must concede that he has fought, a good fight, and had placed before the constituents his party’s programme very ably. The voting however, shows that the people of this electorate along with the vast majority of New Zealanders do not want Labour’s programme, and therefore bis fig'ht was a losing one from the commencement. It was unfortunate that Mr. Hollings should have persevered throughout the campaign as at no time did he appear to have a sporting chance of getting near the figures of his two opponents.
