Diamond is a corruption of the Greek word “adamant,” meaning untamable or refractory. The Greeks called the diamond “adamant” because of its excessive hardness. Among- the Aztecs, the ancient inhabitants of Mexico, it was the custom to make images of their gods in paste; these were broken up and distributed among the worshippers. At, a recent Drapery Exhibition in London a novelty in stockings was on view. By daylight they appear to be ornamented with green clocks and yellow flowers, but at night the designs appear luminous, as they are painted in phosphorescent material. The mixture used is stated to be a secret. Ordinary life insurance sales in Canada, in June were the highest ever recorded in any month. The total sales of the reporting companies, which have 83 per cent, of the outstanding business, amounted to 42,307,000 dollars of insurance. This is 23 per cent, more than sales in June last year. Canon Staunton, rector of Tramore, England, while fishing in the bay for mackerel, caught a young shark over 4ft. long. He was missing fish which he knew he had hooked, and, suspecting that they were being taken off the lines, he played for the shark and hooked it.
