UNIQUE DISCOVERY
ANCIENT ROCK CARVINGS
Rotorua, October 2,
The discovery on Kaingnroa Plains of ancient rock carvings is arousing the keen interest of the Forest Service men, who made the discovery when planting newlyburnt areas on Rangitaiki Fall, Kningnroa. On a rock face eighty-six feet long, figures of 30 canoes are carved in relief. No knowledge exists among the Maoris or inhabitants concerning the history of this carving. Mr. Hamilton, of the Dominion Museum, arrived last night to investigate. Dr. Buck has also been communicated with, and asked to render aid in solving the mystery. The canoes, represented have breaks on the water-line, with a bow platform. A possible ethnological link'may be established by the discovery.
