THE HEMP MARKET,

The following are the returns showing the quantities (in bales) of hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips graded at the ports of the Dominion during the month of September, 1925: The following shows the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:—

Fifteen hales at Romahapa were graded superfine; 1 at Auckland, 78' at Foxton, 74 at Wellington, 2 at Blenheim and 10 at Lyttelton were rejected. The following shows the number of hales graded in each grade, the number graded during the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Superfine 15 (4), good fair 319 (107), high fair 3,254 (3,070), low fair 1059 (1504), common 409 (220), rejected 105 (130), condemned nil (nil), a total of 5521 hales, an increase of 720 bales.

The following shows the number of hales graded at each port: — Auckland 509, Foxton 2,195, Wellington 2,113, Blenheim 38, Wairoa 109, Bluff 389, Lyttelton 106, Dunedin 170, Pt. Chalmers 18, Romahapa 114. The following gives the particulars of the tow graded:

Six bales at Auckland, 15 at Foxton, 11 at Wellingtn, and 4 at Blenheim were condemned.

The following shows the number of hales graded in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis : First grade 319 (282), 2nd grade 817 (808), 3rd grade 105 (96), condemned 36 (18), a total of 1,277 hales, an increase of 13 hales. The following is the number of hales graded at each port:— Auckland 81, Foxton 393, Wellington 372, Blenheim 49, Wairoa 20, Lyttelton 134, Dunedin 39, Pt. Chalmers 11, Bluff 172. Stripper Tow: —80 hales were graded 2nd. grade at Foxton, 13 Ist grade and 20 3rd grade at Wellington, a total of 202 bales, an increase of 108 hales against September last year. Stripper Slips: —19 hales at Auckland .were graded 2nd grade, 20 hales 2nd grade and 38 hales passed for export at Foxton; 31 hales passed for export at Blenheim; 0 hales 2nd grade at Wairoa; and 20 hales 2nd grade and 43 passed for export, at Bluff, a total of 177 hales as against 254 hales for the same period last, year, a decrease of 77 hales.
