PUBLIC MEETING.

BIG EFFORT TO BE ORGANISED. FOR SWIMMNIG BATHS, PARKS AND SPORTS PURPOSES. There was a good attendance at the adjourned £>ublic meeting, convened by the local Beautifying Society, held in the Town Hall restroom on Tuesday night, presided over by His Worship the Mayor t.M. E. Perreau, Esq.). All local .ports bodies were well represented. In opening, the Mayor outlined at some length the object of the meeting and said that it was to consider the advisability of holding an effort to raise funds for the erection of swimming baths and beautification works in the town.

Mr. W. Jewell, representing the United Sports Association, said the ( luh were of the opinion in view of llie sad tragedies that had recent lv occurred (hat the matter of

swimming baths should he the first aim. Everyone had it moral obligaiuni in the preservation of life and every child should be taught to ;>wim. Tiie matter of the ambulance seemed to he an important one and would have the support of the community. ITe advocated that jo obtain finance consideration he given lo an art union. Mr D. Christie said he was in

favour of hntlis being the first consideration. If (hey went about the effort in the right way there would he plenty of money for a children’s playground and other works also. A monster art union was the best way of raising money. The Mayor suggested the allocation of £ISOO for baths, and £ISOO for parks and £750 for an ambulance.

Mr Mason opposed this on the grounds that “sports purposes” would be better than “sports bodies.’''

Mr. Winstanlcy then moved a motion that the effort be to raise money for baths and amateur sports purposes. This was seconded bv Mr. Mason.

Mr. McMurray moved an amendment seconded by Mr. Admore that I lie effort )>e for (1) swimmingbaths, (2) equipping of Easton Mark and Victoria Park and for amateur sports purposes. This was carried by 12 —3. The amendment then became the motion and was put and carried.

Decided that the effort take the form of an art union; that a committee be set up to go into (lie details. The following general committee v. as then set up: —Messrs D. Christie, I' 1 . M ason, h\.
