The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council will he held at 7.30 o'clock on Monday night.
The postponed public, meeting convened by the local eßautifying Society, to have been held last Tuesday night, will he held on Tuesday next, at 8 p.m., in the Town Hall rest-room.
The friends of Mrs Mantel!, of Liddell Street, will he pleased to learn that, she is making satisfactory progress towards recovery in her recent illness and will soon be able to return to her home.
The (ire waste in New Zealand for the year ended December 31, 1024, was £1,234,327 —17s 2d per head fo population. This is a very considerable loss —in fact, one of the biggest of any country in the world.
Local body loans to Hie amount of £7,099,901, were authorised during 1024, Iml only £2,322,703 was actually raised in that year. In the March quarter of the present year the authorisations totalled £1,143,788 and the total amount actually raised was £1,049,503.
The Defence Department lias notified the Rev. W. IT. Walton, C.F., that the annual camps will he held in November, December and February. The first camp will he the 17th Battery Field Artillery, from Wellington, followed )>y Palmerston N. 7th and Bth Battery, (itli Napier Battery, and 19th Battery 001 b. guns from Wellington. ( The stamper in Dunedin stamped over 55,000 opposum skins during July and August, and 2.1,000 of these skins were taken in the Otago district, a few in Southland, and (lie remainder on the West Coast of the North Island. Dunedin is the chief place of assembly and the headquarters of the opposum skin market.
Ambergris still keeps drifting ashore on the western hays of Stewart Island. Among recent hauls was a fine piece of matured grey ambergris weighing 32 ounces. The Leask Bros, who found a big quantity early in the year and forwarded it on to London got u return just short of £IOOO, which is about the best for one haul yet experienced in Stewart Island.
The ratepayers of Otnki mi Wednesday rejected two hums of £SOOO each for street improvements and sewerage completion. The voting was: Streets, for 3 01., against .100; sewerage, for 101, against 108. The effect of the sewerage poll is that the work already done, on which the whole of the first loan lias been expended, is useless because there are no funds to linish the scheme.
Mr. P. L. Hollings, Solicitor of Eoxton announces bis intention of contesting the Manawatu Seat at the General Election in the Liberallabour interests. Mr. Hollings is a resident of Eoxton and Levin, and was formerly Mayor of Maslorlon. lie. will open his campaign in Eoxton next week, and will speak at all centres in the Electorate before the Election
“This is not the time and place to talk polities,” said Mr. .1. Linklater, M.P., when opening the bulb show at Rougolca on Wednesday, “but the elections arc approaching and 1 want to announce that 1 will again be a candidate for the Manawatu electorate." Applause greeted the announcement, and Mr. Linklater proceeded to slate that he deemed it his duty lo again come out as a follower of Mr Coates. lie would do his best to give satisfaction, although one could not satisfy everybody. In the past be had only done his plain duty as he saw it and lie would stand by the consequences. He thanked the people of Rongotea for their kindness to him and stated that, whether he was again retained or not, he would always remember it. Reference to the bright prospects ahead of the farming industry in the coming season was made by Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., when opening the Rongotea horticultural show on Wednesday. In congratulating farmers on the outlook, he said that the prospects for the coming season were as good as he had known them for a number of years past. Wool, naturally, could not be expected to fetch the wonderful prices of last year and, if the farmers got half those values, they would be doing quite well, and the recent sales in Australia struck u hopeful vein in this direction. Butler prices were good and, regarded on the whole, the outlook was pleasing indeed.
