In referring (o the report of j ln* commit lee on (lie Shannon bridge, Mr. A. L. Monleilh (Wellington East) regretted tliat nothing was proposed towards a solution of (lie problem whirl) faced the settlers of tin’s particular district. The local bodies and also the engineers had differed on the question as to whether the bridge had been safe from floods and fears of the petitioners were borne out when two spans'collapsed. A punt which had been quite unsatisfactory had been put in at a cost- to date of about £2OOO. It would cost between £4OOO and £SOOO to replace the spans which had been washed away. Mr. J. Linklater (Manawatu) explained that the committee thought (lie controlling local body (the Horowhenua County Council}, should''move for a commission to allocate the contributions on the cost of a new bridge. He understood this was going to he asked for There had been some difference..„as. to whether a new brie Ige should be built or whether the two spans should be replaced. The punt was Cumbersome and not serviceable to the settlers. As an explanation, Mr. J. M. Dickson (Chalmers) said if a new bridge were erected the Main Highways Board could not be levied till it controlled the road leading to and from it. rrThe report was allowed to lie on the table.
