HEMP MARKET

AUGUST GRADING RETURNS.

The returns showing the quantities of hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips graded for the month of August have been forwarded by the Department of Agriculture as under: —

The following shows the detailed particulars of the hemp greaded:— Ports G.P. H.F. L.F. C.

Fourteen bales at Picton were graded fine. Thirty-three bales at Auckland, 89 at .Foxton, 148 at Wellington and four at Blenheim were rejected and seven bales at Auckland condemned. The number in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —Fine 14 (14), good fair 169 (362), high fair 2778 (2250), low fair 1914 (1036), common 194 (78), rejected 274 (78), condemned 7 (nil), a total of 5,350 bales as against 3818 last year, an increase of 1532 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: Auckland 605, Foxton 1627, Wellington 2154, Picton 47, Blenheim 153, Wairoa 446, Blulf 235, Lyttelton 83. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded :

* Twenty-nine bales at Auckland 21 at Foxton, 18 at Wellington and eight at Blenheim were condemned. °The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the numbei for the corresponding period last year being given in parenthesis. Ist grade 77 (196), 2nd.grade 770 (644), 3rd grade 142 (89), condemned 5 (2), making a total of 1065 as against 922 graded for the same period last year, an increase of 143 bales. The number graded at each poi t was as follows: Auckland 160, Foxton 223, Wairoa 43, Wellington 447, Picton 19, Blenheim 73, Bluff 93, Lyttelton 7. Stripper tow: —Ninety-four bales at Foxton, one at Auckland and 144 at Wellington were graded 2nd grade and 13 bales at Wellington 3rd grade. Five bales at Wellington were condemned. The total number graded was 25 1 bales against 107 for the same period last year, an increase of 150 bales. Stripper slips Fifteen bales at Auckland, 26 at Foxton, six at Wellington and 43 at Wlairoa were graded 2nd grade and one bale at Auckland, 30 at Foxton, 18 at Wellington an 11 at Bluff were passed for export, making a total of 150 bales as against 99 graded last year, an increase of 51 bales.
