COAL TROUBLE BREWING ON COAST.
STOP-WORK MEETING AT STATE MINES. Greymouth, Thursday. A difference between the State miners and the management, existing some months, over the safety question in relation 'to timbering, came to a bead to-day when the Union held stop-work meetings at Runanga and Rewanui, at which it was stated the management were not allowing miners the right to timber places for their own safety and to their own satisfaction, It was resolved to send a ’deputation to the mine-manager. It is understood the result of the deputation’s proposals will be submit led to another Union meeting tomorrow. The mines were idle today and will be to-morrow.
The miners wish to have sets of limber in certain places but the management in some instances consider sets sufficient. For the sets the miners are paid but not for the pi o|is.
A TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT.
Groymqut.h, September 4
At the State Miners’ Union meeting to-day it was decided to resume work, on receiving a report from its deputation to the mine manager (Mr, Davis) that until the return of the general manager (Mr. James), the right, of miners to limber their respective places for safety purposes to their own .satisfaction will be recognised by the management.
It was pointed out at the meeting (bat the miners wore the best judge in their own places as to whether or not a roof was safe enough to do without timber. The mines will resume on Monday.
