Accused was further charged that, on or about June 2, at Levin, by means of a valueless cheque lor cfo drawn on the Bank of New Zealand at Lower Mutt. h‘e did obtain from E. R a [Joy £JO in monev, with intent to defraud.
Accused pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to be dealt with suminarilv.
Detective-Sergeant Quirke said that accused opened a bank account at Lower llutt with £l(i soon alter he commenced working there. Four days later he had overdrawn il with a valueless cheque for .Cf>. AccusVd later had issued cheques for the nominal value of £IOO Os, uli of which had been dishonoured. He eitgd previous convictions rendered against accused. Hamilton, August 20. Howard .James Thomas, an ex-school-master, pleaded guilty to seven charges of intent to defraud by issuing valueless cheques to the amount of jCIi. The police stilted that other cheques had been issued, representing all told £SO 15s. it was a case of opening a small banking ueocunt, obtaining a cheque-book, and issuing the cheques. The accused had hitherto borne a good character, but was living apart from his wife, and had come under the spell of another woman. Many of the cheques had been issued to pay for purchases by this lady. The accused was admitted to probation for twelve months on condition that the money is restored.
