NEWS AND NOTES

A tally of tlu* trallie passing bis house on Broadway, near the Great South Road intersection, was taken by Mr. J. Roberts recently between 3.30 and 5 o’clock at Auckland. In the 70 minutes the vehicles which passed comprised 755 motor-ears, 104 tramcars, 67 motor cycles, 02 buses, 43 bicycles, 13 motor lorries and 4 horse-driven vehicles. The rate of traffic works out at 15 a minute. It is eloquent of the passing of the horse that of the total of 1048 vehicles only four went by horse-power. Everyone has friends who borrow books and forget to return them. Such a practice is annoying, but in the case of public libraries it is serious. Steps have been taken in New Plymouth to recover books “lost" from the library. The chief inspector, who bad made investigations on behalf of the library committee, reported to the New Plymouth Borough Council Council this week that in all cases the books had been returned or the cost of' replacement pnid. He intended in future to take proeecd-ino-s in some of (he cases, as it did not seem a fair thing that the country should be scoured for missing books.
