BURIED IN SAND PIT.

BOY’S TERRIBLE ORDEAL

Taumarnmii, August 8. Ray Bernie, the young son of Miami Mrs C. Bernie, of Matapuna, had a remarkable escape from death. He was playing in a ballast pit at the back of bis parents’ house and digging under a 20ft. hank, when it gave way way, burying him to a depth of 311. The fall must have weighed fully a lon. Another little boy who bad been playing with him ran to the house, but ilrs Bernie did not understand what lie meant at tirsi. When she realised her son was buried she rushed down and began to scrape tho sand away with her hands, but gave up in despair. She then ran for a neighbour, and together they began scraping the sand away. Their efforts were in vain, however. The mother then sent for Mr. R. V. Pickin, who ran to the scene of the accident and worked feverishly with iiis hands. At last he felt the hoy's hand and at length managed to get him out. The hoy was black in the face when extricated, but Pickin worked with him, and at last saw signs of returning life. There is no doubt that but for the timely arrival of t’ickin the boy would have lost his life. He was under the sand fully a-quarter of an hour and would probably have been killed outright hut for the fact that his arm was under his head and the weight full on his buck.
