FINANCE OF THE DOMINION.

In order to prevent misunderstanding or confusion the Treasury is now issuing an official summary of the Dominion’s quarterly accounts. Following is the statement for the last quarter, full particulars of which will appear in the Gazette in the usual course:— The revenue received for the quarter to June 30 last: amounted to £5,75(5,181. For the same period of last year the amount received was £5,200,440, there being thus an increase in revenue of £489,741 as compared with the June quarter of last rear.

The principal increases are Customs £175,138; stamp and death duties £51,159; post and telegraph £92, 546, and railways, £222,777.

The principal decreases are: — Income tax, £12,428; miscellaneous revenue, £37,101.

The total net expenditure for Ihe quarter was £7,111,211 as compared with £0,590,519 for the same period last year, there being thus an increase of £514.092.

The principal increases are: — Under special Acts £01,537, working railways £31.3,353 (mostly due to increased wages and purchases of stores and material), industries and commerce £15,388, naval defence £25,409. Department, of Education £50,337. The principal decreases are: Post and Telegraph £10,320, mental hospitals £12,416. The excess of payments over receipts for (lie quarter was £1,355,030 as compared with the June quarter last year of £1,330,070. This is the usual position as the larger collections of the main tax revenues are made in the later portion of ihe financial year. The statement also adds: ‘‘lt will he interesting to note that the exports for the six months to June 30 last lotalled £38,398,259 compared with £33,500.994. while the imports for the 1925 half year were £25,015,285 compared with £22,014,4113.” The Post Office Savings Batik deposits for the six months totalled £15.831,000 and withdrawals £14,892,103, the excess of deposits being thus £939,400.
