DROWNING AT TANGIMOANA.
MR. CHARLES LYON THE vremr. Mr, Charles Lyon, tailor, of Rongolea, ami proprietor of the store nt Tangimoana, was drowned at the latter plane at about 1.30 on Tuesday a I‘ternoon. Details of this sad and sudden tragedy, whirdi has claimed one of the best known and most highlyrespected residents of the district, show that the deceased and bis sun Edward, were gathering; drift - wood, using two small boats. One, with the cargo of fnel, was being lowed behind the other, in which were the two men. They had readied a point about halfway from the Heads to the township when they found no progress could he made against the'out(lowing tide, and it was decided to try to ne-
gotiate the current, one in each boat. They still experienced difficulty in making headway, with the laden craft, so it was decided that Mr. Lyon junior should row for assistance. .MY. Jones, fisherman, was summoned in a few minutes, hut on returning to the beach they found no trace of the boa I or its occupant. Nets were immediately stretched across the channel at the river mouth, hut there was no chance of recovering the body till low tide til t; oYlock last evening and up till a late hour last night, no word rn Ibis effect had been received. Deceased is survived by his widow and family of eight: —Mesdarnes W. Foster (Rongotea), A. MeClenn (Palmerston North), Misses Rita and Susie and Mrs Edward, .Tames. Charles and Alfred, all of Rongotea. A. later message stale that the body of deceased has been recovered.
